Seed melon is resistant to barren and drought, and has strong adaptability. It is widely cultivated in northern arid areas. In some areas, it can be cultivated in rainy southern areas under long-term domestication and artificial selection

1、 Northwest production area

The climate is arid, and the light and heat resources are rich. It belongs to the northwest semi-arid and arid agricultural climate region, and is also the main production area of seed melon cultivation in China. According to the incomplete statistics in 1989, the total planting area of seed melon in northwest provinces is about 100000 hectares, and the total yield is about 123000 tons, accounting for 80% and 90% of the country's total cultivation area and yield respectively.

Gansu Province is an old production area of seed melon in China. Lanzhou seed melon, the main local variety, enjoys a high reputation at home and abroad. The whole province is divided into two major cultivation areas: one is the sand field dry cultivation area with Lanzhou as the center, including Gaolan, Jingyuan, Jingtai, Huining, Lintiao and other counties, which has a long planting history; the other is the Hexi irrigation cultivation area in Gansu Province, which is a new production area developed in the 1980s, with large planting area and high yield, and is the main commodity base of seed melon in Gansu Province.

Xinjiang is a new production area of seed melon, which has gradually developed since 1980s. Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is mainly distributed in Pingluo, Shizuishan, Taole, Helan and other counties. Pingluo County has a long history of cultivation, good quality and high yield. The main cultivar is pingluohong melon seed, which is cultivated under irrigation. The yield per hectare is 1125kg, or more than 1500kg.

2、 North China region

It is mainly produced in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and belongs to temperate arid or semi-arid region. The climate is characterized by large temperature difference and long sunshine hours. The main production areas are distributed in Zhelimu League, Aohan banner of Chifeng City, Horqin Right Wing Front Banner of Xing'an League and Hetao Plain of Bayannaoer League. Lanzhou big plate seed melon was introduced in the 1970s, with a yield of 1800kg per hectare.

3、 Southern production area

It is also cultivated locally in high temperature and humidity areas of East China, central China and South China.

Seed melon cultivation in Jiangxi Province is mainly distributed in Xinfeng, Wucheng, Jishui, Taihe and other places. The cultivar is Xinfeng white flesh red seed melon, with purple seed coat, small plate and full body. The yield per hectare is is 750KG, and the high yield can reach 1500kg. It is mainly produced in Daozhou County of Hunan Province and has a long history of cultivation. Most of its products are sold to coastal cities and some are exported. Anhui seed melon is distributed in Hefei, Liuhe, Wuhu and other places, many kinds of local varieties are planted, dingxinbai, Lanzhou seed melon is planted sporadically. The yield per hectare is about 900 kg, and most of the products are small and medium-sized board seeds. The varieties planted in Taiwan Province originally came from other provinces of the motherland. Later, red seed melons such as Hongfu and Zhuxiang were planted, and black seed melons such as Nongyou Wanli were also planted.
